Our destiny

The massifs of Rila and Pirin are the highest mountains of the Balkan Peninsula and are the most suitable terrain in Bulgaria for hikers. In these mountains, which are national parks, glacial lakes and valleys abound. In its valleys there are small thermal stations that are the perfect place to relax after a long day of trekking.

Our first walks pass through the Rila mountain. Here we will climb the pic Musala (2925 m), the highest in the country, the Turkish-Arabic origin name means "the last before God" and we will discover the enchanted circus of the Seven Lakes of Rila. During the transfer from one mountain to the other, we will stop visiting the famous Rila Monastery: the most important in Bulgaria for its fascinating architecture, art and history. We will continue the trip exploring the alpine mountains of the Pirin National Park. We will climb to the pyramid of white marble of the Vijren peak (2914 m). At the end of the trip we will visit the beautiful cities of Plovdiv and the capital, Sofia.

Day 1: Fly to Sofia

Arrival to Sofia Transfer to the downtown hotel and accommodation.

Day 2: Sofia

Visit of the historical center of the capital. The most important monuments: the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (20th century), which is the largest Orthodox church in Bulgaria, the church of Saint Sophia (6th century), the roundabout Saint George (4th century), the Mosque Bashi Djami Horn (16th century), the Synagogue (20th century), etc. Free time for shopping and visits. Dinner.

Day 3: Pic Musala

Day dedicated to the ascent of the Musala peak (2925m), the highest in the Balkan Peninsula. In the morning we will take you to the Borovets ski and summer resort. From there, we will climb a cable car at a height of 2350 m, from where our walk begins. We will pass through two mountain refuges and several lakes, among which the highest lake in the country: Ledeno Ezero (2710m). In about 3 hours with views to Vitosha and the Balkans to the north, we reach the "roof" of Bulgaria! From there, if we are lucky, we can enjoy an excellent panorama. Picnic lunch At the end, a short transfer to the family hotel where we will stay for three nights. Dinner.

Day 4: Pic Malyovitsa

Today we have to know the most impressive glacial valley of Rila: that of Malyovitsa. In the morning, a short transfer to the homonymous mountain center. Known as the "Verdón de l'escalada" in Bulgaria, the Malyovitsa valley and peak attracts not only mountaineers but also adventurers from around the world who come here to enjoy beautiful views and the impressive relief of the ridge and the peak Malyovitsa. In about 3 hours we will reach the top (2729m). Picnic lunch Transfer to the hotel and dinner.

Day 5: The Seven Rila Lakes

In the morning we will move to the Paníchish mountain center. We will climb the chairlift to the Rilski Ezera hut to get to the alpine ridge of the most charming part of the Rila mountain. We undertake a very beautiful walk for the magic circus of the Seven Lakes of Rila. Step by step we discover the "7 wonders": Lake Dólnoto (the one below), the Rbnoto (the one of the fish), the Trilístnika (the clover), the Bliznaka (the binoculars), the Bábreka (the kidney) and optionally the Higher the Okoto (the eye) and the Salzata (the tear). Picnic lunch At the descent we will pass through coniferous forests. Transfer to our hotel and dinner.

Day 6: Rila Monastery

From Govedartsi we will take a bus (2 h) to the Monastery of Rila, the jewel of Bulgarian art and culture, a monument declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. We will visit the monastery and a short walk of 2 hours to the cave where the hermit and founder of the monastery San Juan de Rila resided. The promenade crosses mixed forests of the nature reserve belonging to the monastery and overlooks the deep river valley of the Rilska. After lunch we continue by bus to the south in the direction of Bansco. Here we stayed for 2 nights in the Pyrenees mountain skirt (National Park declared by UNESCO). Dinner and lodging in a family hotel.

Day 7: Refuge Vijren - Demyantuous Refuge

In the morning we will take a bus to the refuge Vijren (1950 m) where we will begin our walk through the Pyrenees circus of Pirin. We pass through several lakes of crystalline waters to reach the hill of the north. We will descend admiring beautiful lakes and coniferous forests following the valley of the Demyánitsa river. Picnic lunch back to Bansco. Dinner and lodging in the same family hotel.

Hike: 6-7 hours

Day 8: Pic Vijren - Plovdiv

Day dedicated to the rise of the highest peak in the massif and the second highest in Bulgaria, Vijren (2914m). We leave again from the Vijren refuge and start the walk through the rocky ridges, all with white marble and granite. We will enjoy spectacular views from the summit to the Greek mountains to the south, the well-known mountain of Rila to the north and all the wonders of Pirin. Picnic lunch We will return to the refuge. Continue towards Plovdiv by bus: second city of the country of great cultural importance. Accommodation in downtown hotel and dinner.

Day 9: Bachkovo Monastery - Plovdiv

Morning transfer of 40 min. from Plovdiv to visit the Bachkovo monastery, founded the 1083 and located in the Rodopes mountains. It is the second most important part of the country, it has impressive frescoes from the beginning of the 17th century. Optionally you can take a pleasant walk along the pilgrimage route next to the monastery that leads to the cave where the miraculous icon of the Virgin was found. Free accommodation in Plovdiv. Dinner.

Day 10: Plovdiv - Sofia

Visit of the old town of Plovdiv, a meeting point for many cultures: this is confirmed by the Roman theater, the walls of the fortress of the medieval period and the Renaissance period architecture (18th and 19th centuries). In the afternoon transfer to Sofia. Airport transfer.
